What is the Science-Based Targets initiative?
SBTi is a non-profit organization that works towards corporate climate actions – basically enables corporates to set their Paris-aligned net zero targets (Net Zero by 2050). They play a role in the following two aspects:
Target Setting Enabler: Develop standard and tools that enable corporates to set emission reduction targets in order to reach net zero by 2050 (Paris Agreement aligned)
Target Validation: Assess and validates targets set by corporates
Key Features of SBTi
Criteria | SBTi |
---|---|
Year Introduced | 2015 |
Based on 1.5°C Paris Agreement targets | ✅ Yes |
Carbon Offsets allowed early | ❌ No (Near-term) |
✅ Yes (Net-zero residuals) | |
Net-zero timeline | 2050 |
Scope 3 required | ✅ If >40% |
Sector-specific pathways | ✅ Yes |
Verification of Targets Set by the respective frameworks | ✅ Yes, verified by SBTi itself |
When to use? | Want to set a 1.5 C Paris aligned target |
Approx. corporate adoption | 10,600 + companies across 100 + countries committed and around 8,000 already holding fully validated targets |
Why SBTi is most widely used framework?
Among net zero frameworks, SBTi has the broadest global uptake, since it is

While SBTi is the most recognized framework, other frameworks, such as PAS 2060 and ISO 14068, are also used, which will be explored in upcoming insights.
