Methane Avoidance Projects
Biodigester, one of the most additional methane avoidance projects, consists of a sealed tank that turns animal dung into biogas and organic slurry through anaerobic digestion (which is a biological process carried out by bacteria to breakdown biodegradable material in the absence of oxygen). Biogas is then used as a cooking fuel by rural households and organic slurry as an organic fertilizer, which improves soil health and crop yields. In the absence of a biodigester, the waste gets decomposed in open pits or fields, releasing methane, a potent greenhouse gas. The generated biogas replaces traditional fuels such as firewood, further avoiding emissions. These avoided emissions help generate carbon credits.
